SFE 2023 Artist Think Tank Spotlight Guest Artist Soulaf Abas - The Unfolding of an Artist’s Path

We’re excited and honored to introduce a special guest for this Artist Think Tank Spotlight. Meet Soulaf Abas

Soulaf Abas, a painter/printmaker from Indiana, by way of Damascus, Syria. She’ll share her approach to finding opportunities in the fine art world (shows, residencies and more), as well as strategies for creating joy and satisfaction as an artist. One of her greatest passions is instructing artists to tune in to their alignment and follow their vision.

In this workshop, she’ll share:

  • Cultivating a sense of empowerment as an artist
  • The importance of tuning in to one’s alignment as an artist
  • Being skillful at selecting. . . and even turning down opportunities

Speaker(s): Soulaf Abas, born and raised in Damascus, Syria, earned her BFA from Indiana State University. Then she returned to Syria and taught art at the Arab European University. She also spent some time translating books and articles in Arabic and English. In 2010, Soulaf returned to Indiana State University to get her Master’s in fine arts. Soulaf returned to Damascus-Syria to visit her family in the summer of 2012, a year after the revolution began. There, she started creating images in painting and printmaking that depicted what she’d experienced. She continues to explore the effects of loss and trauma in her oil painting and printmaking works. Her work was exhibited nationally and internationally. She also received multiple residencies and awards for her work like the Social Justice Residency in Santa Fe, NM, and multiple ELCE Grants from Indiana State University.
