The Emancipation Proclamation forced Southern plantation owners to free their slaves. Two years would pass before slaves were liberated. Juneteenth “June Nineteenth, 1865” marks the day when federal troops arrived to Texas to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth became an official federal holiday on June 17, 2021. Learn why this is a day of celebration, controversy and healing.
